If a Machine Could Talk

چکیده
This paper investigates a set of ideas collected from philosophy of language, complexity theory, language technology, cognitive science and literary criticism in an attempt to throw light on the (im)possibility of language technology. It is argued that a fundamental difference between humans and computers can be described in terms of a distinction between complex and complicated systems. However, it is possible to make computers complex and flexible insofar as they can be made to learn from experience. It has been shown that linguistic conventions can emerge from interactions between computers. If developed, this idea would enable computers to enter into complex interactions with humans where new linguistic conventions, and indeed new languages, can emerge from interactions between computers and humans with their very different physiological, cognitive, social and ecological affordances.

Talking to a system and oneself: A study from a Speech-to-Speech, Machine Translation mediated Map Task
The results of a comparison between three different speech types — On-Talk, speaking to a computer, Off-Talk Self , speaking to oneself and Off-Talk Other, speaking to another person — uttered by subjects in a collaborative interlingual task mediated by an automatic speech-to-speech translation system, are reported here. The characteristics of the three speech types show significant differences...
متن کاملUsing Machine Learning to Predict Bug Outcomes from Automation
Sure, automation is great because it can give you a whole bunch of information really fast. And yeah, it is a big pain because it gives you a whole bunch of information really fast. Sometimes the amount is too much to process, but you know you need to look because there might just be an important failure in the pile that has to be fixed. What if it was possible to predict your decision before y...
متن کاملEFL Classroom Discourse in Iranian Context: Investigating Teacher Talk Adaptation to Students’ Proficiency Level
How language teachers talk is a key factor in organizing and facilitating learning specifically in language classrooms where the medium of instruction is also the subject matter. This study aimed to examine the extent and ways of teacher talk adaptation to students’ proficiency levels in the Iranian EFL context. Two EFL teachers who were teaching three different proficiency levels were observed...
متن کاملOff-talk - a problem for human-machine-interaction?
This paper is concerned with the definition and description of the phenomenon Off−Talk in human−machine− interaction. This phenomenon is considered to cause problems due to non−relevant information that is conveyed within these utterances. Besides the definition of Off−Talk our work aims to provide an analysis of transcribed audio data that is part of the SmartKom data collection. In the search...
متن کاملPromoting Dialogic Talk in a Speaking Classroom: Rethinking Bakhtinian Pedagogy
This study sought to promote EFL learners' speaking ability drawing on Bakhtin’s notion of dialogic discourse pattern (DDP) and to explore their perceptions towards implementing dialogic teaching (DT) in a speaking classroom. To this end, from the population of students in different language institutes, 47 students were selected based on a purposive sampling method. The data were collected at t...
متن کاملA Multi-Stage Single-Machine Replacement Strategy Using Stochastic Dynamic Programming
In this paper, the single machine replacement problem is being modeled into the frameworks of stochastic dynamic programming and control threshold policy, where some properties of the optimal values of the control thresholds are derived. Using these properties and by minimizing a cost function, the optimal values of two control thresholds for the time between productions of two successive nonco...
